CANDYSPIKE COFFEE TOTE

A lifetime ago (pre pandemia) I would occasionally pack reusable coffee beakers on my dog walk and swing by my friend Julie’s office via a takeaway, to blether and generally get under her feet. One wet day the barista had filled both beakers with frothy coffee. Then I had to negotiate umbrella + dog lead + handbag + one of those ill-fitting cardboard cup carriers. I arrived at my friend’s office door and had to press the buzzer with my nose (ah the old days). It was very far from elegant.

So I invented the coffee tote. This involved working with a factory in England who cut (really rather a lot of) bespoke cork shapes for me. (I became a bit obsessed, I clearly REALLY wanted to have takeaway coffee with Julie).

The cork insert was designed to fit snugly into the bottom of my canvas shopping bag. Once I’d got the design right it worked like a dream. Two coffee beakers, snug in their insulating cork support, held in one hand or slung over one wrist, with no chance of a latte landing on the dog. I used my prototype for a year or so and it worked so well.

After a lucky chat with Laura Sherriffs of FernwehUK, we decided to go for it and turn the concept into a beautiful collaborative accessory. It’s a dreamy combination of waxed cotton, printed CandySpike denim, oak bark tanned leather, and of course that all important cork insert.

Designed and manufactured in Aberdeen from materials sourced in Great Britain.

Dimensions:

  • fits two lidded cups, each with a maximum diameter (at their mid point) of 8cm

  • body of the tote bag measures 25cm(w) x 13cm(d) x 22cm(h)

Care details:

Waxed cotton is a water resistant cotton which changes colour as it wears and develops a natural patina over time, adding to the character of the product.

- Do not iron waxed cotton as this will cause the wax to melt.

- Spot clean any marks with cold water and leave to dry away from natural light.

- If your bag is particularly dirty, use a soft brush to wipe away excess dirt before cleaning, using a mild soap or detergent and cold water on more stubborn areas.

- You can re-wax the waxed cotton fabric every 6-12 months to restore it to top condition. Tins of wax are available from www.fernwehuk.com
